Ruhr region

The Ruhr region has developed into one of the most important scientific regions in Europe after being shaped by the Industrial Revolution, which made it the centre of Germany’s coal and steel industry. In recent decades, it has undergone a profound transformation, evolving from an industrial centre into a hub of innovation, science, and culture. Currently, it hosts 5 universities, 17 colleges across 32 locations, and 25 non-university research institutions, including 5 Fraunhofer, 4 Max Planck and 4 Leibniz Institutes. One in twenty people in the Ruhr area is a student, making the region the highest student concentration in Germany.

The region integrates a dynamic economic ecosystem (large corporations, SMEs, and startups) with innovation centres such as the BRYCK Startup Alliance. Culturally, the region offers museums, theatres, festivals and events, along with green spaces, parks, and natural areas, all within easy reach.

Studying or conducting research in the Ruhr region provides access to a dense academic network, international cooperation opportunities, and applied innovation, with high quality of life in a vibrant, cosmopolitan, and well-connected region.

Furthermore, compared to other major German metropolitan areas, the Ruhr metropolis offers lower costs of living, particularly regarding housing and food.
